Further Information: Councillor Walsh was selected as the first Chairperson of the Economic Action Group (A sub-committee of the RAPID scheme). A position he held until mid-2004. This groups' objective was to draw up and imlement an economic action plan for the town which would consist of practical, specific and targetted actions. This plan has now been implemented and the group are now drawing up a new list of economic actions. Some of the actions achieved under this economic plan include the opening of a new tourist office, installation of promotional signage in the town, "Early Bird" morning train to Galway City, the construction of an advance factory at the IDA Business Park and the securing of a tenant for same and the installation of the Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - fibre optic cable version of broadband technology throughout the town.

Councillor Walsh has urged the economic action group in considerating the new set of actions to place as their priority action the construction of a new advance factory at the IDA Business Park (This is room on the site for several more). He has also moved a motion at the town council leve calling on the Minister for Enterprise and employment to kick start the process with a view to achieving this action.

Councillor Walsh is a native of Ballinasloe and is extremely proud of his home town. He has always been interested in all aspects of Ballinasloe life. His reason for entering local politics in 1999 was quite simply to help develop the town in a positive manner and thus make it a better and more attractive area to live and work in.

He is deeply interested in the housing area and sees the further availability of local authority rented houses and addordable houses (under part 5 of the planning act) in all areas of the town as crucial in ensuring both balanced integration of our population and that people can afford to purchase their own homes.
