Members and Directors of the Ballinasloe and District Agricultural Society, held in Gullanes Hotel last Week. Chairman Fr. Christy Mc Cormack welcomed the attendence and spoke about the hard voluntary work the Committee and Directors had undertaken in the past year. Secretary John Harney's review reported the success of entries which were the highest for some years even though the weather was not very good on the first day of the show, especially during the all Ireland champion Foal competition, when the heavens opened down on top of everyone outside on the field. The adverse weather conditions and a further increase in costs added somewhat to the reduction of income surplus over expenditure for the year in review. He also thanked the directors, committee and all stewards that helped in anyway to make the show such a success. His report specially thanked all exhibitors, spectators and all who came to the show frrom far or near, as well the Town Council, Fair & Festival, Chamber of Commerce, Gardai, Vintners and all our generous sponsor's who have continuously kept the show going over the years with their financial support, be it big or small. The fundraisers who sold horses for our race night last February which was such a success were also thanked. Speaking from the heart he re- iterated a theme “ The biggest problem we have at the moment is lack of young workers coming on to our committee. There is a few members nominated for new directors later on tonight and I hope that they are successful as we need new ideas and new blood on the board of directors” . Auditors George Coyle & co. were on hand to give a detailed review of the financial operations for the Company and after some votes of condolences to a variety of families bereaved over the year. The new directors elected were John Salmon Jnr. Ronan Keane alongside the new officers which are: President Joe Brooks, Vice President's Godfery Gibbons, Paddy McCormack. Chairman: Fr. Christy McCormack., Vice Chairman: John Burke, Safety Officers: John Burke, Jane Conway., Secretary: John Harney. Under AOB there was a lively discussion on changing the date of the show for 2008 to get away from the horse fair weekend which is very congested and an impossibility for logistics and parking. The suggestion was referred back to the Directors for further careful consideration as to what advantages and disadvantages lie in the moving of the three day Show to a two day in the middle of September . |
