Rosway Walkers hold first AGM Print
Sunday, 25 November 2007

The first Rosway Walkers AGM was held in early November in Padraig Pearses GAA Club, Woodmount, Roscommon. A large crowd attended, which was testament to a year that has seen this club, reach new heights - literally!! Under the guidance of Cathal Cregg who was the driving force for this new club, this group have travelled to some of the farthest and indeed nearest corners of the Ireland. The Sunday walkers are now becoming a familiar sight around the town and its surrounding areas and with membership fast approaching 100, expect to see a lot more of them.

Ian McKeever, broadcaster, adventurer and world record holder for fastest worlds highest seven summit climb was a guest speaker at the meeting. One of his many achievements on route was the completion of Everest in a staggering 26 days, a whole month quicker than the average Everest expedition and he held the audience captive as he regaled them with stories of his climbing experiences. We are delighted to have Ian as an honorary member and wish him well for the future.

In his Chairman's address Cathal Cregg spoke briefly about what had already been achieved in the past 12 months. It's hard to believe that this fledgling group have already conquered the heady heights of the Knockmealdown mountains, Croagh Patrick and Slieve Donard to name a few but the most outstanding achievement was the weekend in Killarney where 31 members of the group climbed and conquered Carrantouhill, the highest mountain in Ireland. Having already climbed two of the highest peaks in the British Isles, the race is on to complete the remaining three.

As well as continuing with the many and varied climbs that have been earmarked for the coming months, extra training for those that want to raise their fitness levels is also being organised.

On electing officers for the coming year, special tributes were paid to Maria O'Farrell Secretary, Ethel Costello outgoing Treasurer and William Roche for all their hard work and commitment into getting this club up and running. There are many others who have contributed to the clubs success and we hope this continues in the future.

The committee for the following year is as follows:
Chairperson: Cathal Cregg
Secretary: Maria O'Farrell
Treasurer: Vera Ryan
PRO: Karen Hurley
Walk Planners/Leaders: William Roche, Judith Roche, Paddy Duignan, Paddy Kenny & Pat Barrett
Club Liason Officer: Ann Marie Moran
